A crown is a dental restoration that replaces the visible exterior of the tooth, from the top down to the gum level. Dr. Mark Galli places dental crowns in Encinitas to restore natural form and function to teeth that are weak or damaged. Well-crafted porcelain crowns are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. They are also strong enough to withstand the forces of biting and chewing and last for many years if maintained properly.
Crowns are placed over weakened or damaged teeth to provide strength and support. Without a crown, the tooth may become damaged further, or require extraction.
Dr. Galli may recommend placing a porcelain crown for any of the following reasons:
The best technology today allows most crowns to be done in a single visit and without the gray metal line that is so common in older crowns. Most are all porcelain, or a combination of very strong tooth colored materials that rebuild teeth comfortably, esthetically, and with little to no side effects.
CEREC technology now enables Dr. Galli to design and deliver your crown all in one visit. CEREC crowns are beautiful, fit comfortably and are very durable. Dr. Galli will design your crown using the CEREC computer system. Then, the CEREC milling machine will fabricate your crown out of a block of medical grade porcelain that matches the color of your natural teeth. The entire process takes only a few hours.
There are usually very few side effects after the procedure and the results are very realistic and comfortable. Most patients enjoy watching the CAD-CAM process and we encourage them to be involved in the design and milling procedures as it is very impressive technology.
Designing and delivering a porcelain crown used to take at least two cosmetic dentistry appointments. In the case of multi-tooth, esthetic or functional treatment, Dr. Galli may sometimes use the alternative technique of taking an impression if your case requires the use of a dental laboratory.
If the older technique is needed, Dr. Galli will prepare the tooth, take digital photographs and impressions to send to the dental laboratory and an assistant will place a temporary crown over the prepared tooth. It should take about two weeks for the crown to be created.
After the laboratory delivers your crown to Dr. Galli, you will return to his office to have it placed. Dr. Galli will remove the temporary and position your permanent crown over your tooth. He will check your bite, fit, and color, making sure there are no asymmetries, and make any final adjustments as needed. Dr. Galli will then bond the crown into place and polish it.
